From accidental to intentional: how to build a career that fits

Most careers don’t fail because of lack of opportunity. They drift because they’re built by chance instead of choice. The shift from accidental to intentional is what creates alignment, clarity and long-term fulfillment.

Most of us don’t plan our careers — they just happen.

A recruiter calls. A new role opens. We say yes.

And before we know it, years have passed, our titles have grown, but something feels “off” and it’s hard to pinpoint because you’ve built great skills along the way.

That’s what I call an organic career — one that unfolds by chance.

There’s nothing wrong with it. But at some point, organic careers start to drift.

The opportunities look great on paper, but they don’t always align with who you’ve become or where you actually want to go.

The alternative? An intentional career — one built with clarity and direction.

Here’s how to create it.

Step 1: Define your north star

Think beyond titles and promotions. Ask yourself:

• What kind of work energizes me?
• What kind of impact do I want to make?
• What does “success” look like on my terms?

Your north star is your long-term direction. The thread that connects your strengths, passions and purpose. When you know it, you can evaluate every opportunity through that lens.

Step 2: Know your criteria

Clarity becomes powerful when it’s specific. List what truly matters to you in your next role and company.

It might include:

• A manager who values growth and trust
• A collaborative culture that encourages learning
• A company solving meaningful problems
• Work-life balance and flexibility

When your criteria are clear, decisions get easier and alignment becomes non-negotiable.

Step 3: Audit your path

Look back at your last few roles. Which ones felt aligned? Which ones didn’t? Notice what drained you and what inspired you.

Those patterns are data. They reveal what you should seek more of and what to leave behind.

Step 4: Evaluate with intention

Before saying yes to a new role, pause and ask:

• Does this move me closer to my north star?
• Will this environment help me grow?
• Am I taking it out of excitement or convenience?

That short moment of reflection can prevent years of misalignment later.
